This is a rond d’Argenton

As with many of these story telling type songs, each cycle of the song repeats an overlapping line from the previous cycle, so that the story can be followed easily. In this song, the leader adds ‘la’ to the second verse line they sing to make the rhythm fit, it doesn’t make any gramatical sense. E.g.

– Catherine is next to the woods, she can’t see anyone coming

Elle n’ose pas passer le bois de peur d’etre surprise
– She doesn’t dare go through the woods for fear of being surprised

Ah! qui me passera le bois moi qui suis si jolie
– not 100% sure of the translation. I think it’s something like “who’s that? I’m so pretty.”

Oh Catherine ce sera moi, Vous tiendrai compagnie
– It’s me, let me accompany you

Quand ils furent au mileu du bois, Leur petits coeurs soupire
– when they were in the middle of the woods, their little hearts leapt.
